If you live on Chicago’s North Side and work downtown, you know the routine. You’re up before the sun, on the Blue Line or the Kennedy by 7, and at your desk by 8:30. By the time you get home, the last thing you want to think about is scheduling a dental appointment.
That’s the reality for a lot of our patients. They know they need a dental crown. They’ve been putting it off for months, maybe years. Not because they’re scared of the procedure, but because they can’t figure out how to fit it into an already packed schedule.
Getting a natural-looking crown in Chicago doesn’t have to disrupt your life. The two-appointment process is designed to work around a busy schedule. With the right planning, you can get the treatment you need without missing work or rearranging your week.
Dr. Paul Chaiken has been treating Chicago professionals for more than 30 years. He understands the constraints. He’s helped thousands of patients fit dental treatment into demanding schedules. Here’s how to make it work.

Understanding the Two-Appointment Process
Before we talk logistics, let’s clear up what getting a crown actually involves:
- Appointment one: Preparation. This visit takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Dr. Chaiken examines the tooth, numbs the area, reshapes the tooth, takes impressions, and places a temporary crown. You leave with a functional tooth that looks and feels normal.
- Waiting period: Lab fabrication. The dental lab creates your custom crown. This typically takes two to three weeks.
- Appointment two: Placement. This visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Dr. Chaiken removes the temporary crown, checks the fit of the permanent one, cements it in place, and polishes it. You’re done.
That’s it! Two appointments, a few weeks apart. Both are short enough to fit around a workday.
How to Schedule Around a Commute
If you work downtown and live on the North Side, our Jefferson Park dental office is actually convenient. Here’s why:
- It’s on the Blue Line. The Jefferson Park Transit Center is a major hub. If you take the Blue Line downtown for work, you can stop at Jefferson Park on your way home. The office is at 5953 N Milwaukee Avenue, a short distance from the station.
- It’s accessible from the Kennedy. If you drive downtown, you’re probably taking the Kennedy Expressway. Jefferson Park is right off the Kennedy at the Milwaukee Avenue exit. You can schedule an afternoon appointment and head home with little detour.
- There’s free parking. Unlike downtown offices, our Jefferson Park location has a free parking lot. That’s a real advantage if you’re driving in for an appointment.
- Early morning and late afternoon slots. We offer appointments throughout the day, including slots that work for patients who need to come before or after work.
For patients who live closer to Skokie, our Old Orchard Shopping Center office is equally convenient. It’s near the Evanston border, with easy access from the Edens, and plenty of parking at the shopping center.
What the Temporary Crown Phase Actually Feels Like
One concern we hear from commuters is the temporary crown. Patients worry it’ll feel weird, look obvious, or interfere with their workday.
Here’s what to expect. The temporary crown is a functional restoration that protects your tooth while the permanent crown is being made. For the most part, it looks and feels like a normal tooth. You can eat, drink, and speak normally. Most patients forget it’s there within a day.
There are a few things to know:
- Avoid very sticky or hard foods. Temporary cement isn’t as strong as permanent cement. Avoid caramel, taffy, and hard candies. Don’t chew on ice or bite your fingernails.
- Be gentle with flossing around the crown. You can floss, but pull the floss out sideways rather than snapping it up. That prevents the temporary from loosening.
- If the temporary comes off, call us. This is rare, but it happens. Save the temporary and call us. We can re-cement it or get you in quickly.
For most commuters, the temporary phase is a non-issue. You go to work, you eat lunch, you come home, and life goes on.
Handling a Dental Emergency While Commuting
If you have a dental emergency during the workday, here’s what to do:
- Call us immediately. Call our Chicago dental office at 708-274-4192 or our Skokie office at 224-298-7907. If you’re downtown, we can advise you on what to do next.
- If you’ve cracked a tooth or lost a filling, save any pieces. Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there’s bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze.
- If you’re in severe pain, don’t wait. Dental pain usually gets worse, not better. If you can leave work for an emergency appointment, do it.
- If you’re closer to Skokie than Jefferson Park, we can see you there. Both offices handle emergencies, and we can usually get you in the same day for urgent issues.
- If your workplace has an on-site dentist or a preferred provider, you can also use them for immediate triage. But for a crown or any restorative work, you’ll want to come to us so we have continuity of care.
Planning Around Business Travel
If you travel frequently for work, the two-appointment process is actually easier to manage than you might think.
Here’s how to plan it. Schedule the first appointment for a week when you’ll be in town. Get the preparation done and leave with a temporary crown. Then schedule the second appointment for at least three weeks later, after your next trip. The temporary crown can stay in place for several weeks without any issues.
If you’ll be out of town for an extended period, let us know. We can adjust the timeline or coordinate with a dentist in your destination city if there’s an emergency. But for most business travelers, the standard two-appointment schedule works fine.
