If you’re missing one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth, you already know it affects more than just your smile. Eating becomes harder. Speaking feels different. And over time, your remaining teeth can shift out of place. But you have options. At North Dental Professionals, with offices in both Chicago and Skokie, Dr. Paul Chaiken offers three main solutions for replacing missing teeth. Each has its own strengths. The right choice depends on your situation, your goals, and your budget.
Let’s break them down simply.

Dental Implants: The Gold Standard
Dental implants are the closest thing to having your natural teeth back. Instead of sitting on top of your gums, an implant replaces the entire tooth, root and all. A small titanium post is surgically placed into your jawbone. Over a few months, that post fuses with your bone. Then we attach a custom-made crown on top.
Implants look, feel, and function like real teeth. They’re permanent. You don’t have to take them out. They don’t require special cleaning. And because they stimulate your jawbone, they prevent the bone loss that happens when teeth are missing. However, implants take longer, several months from start to finish. The upfront cost is higher than other options. And you need enough healthy bone to support the implant.
Implants are often best for patients who want the most natural, long-lasting solution and are willing to invest the time and money.
Dental Bridges: The Classic Solution
A bridge fills the gap left by one or several missing teeth. It uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors. We prepare those teeth, then place a connected set of crowns that “bridge” the space.
Bridges are faster than implants, usually completed in just a few weeks. They cost less than implants. And they don’t require surgery. However, we have to shave down the healthy teeth next to the gap to support the bridge. That’s permanent. Bridges also don’t stimulate your jawbone, so bone loss can still happen over time. And because they’re not as strong as implants, they may need replacement after 10 to 15 years.
Bridges are best for patients who want a fast, affordable fix and don’t want surgery.
Dentures: The Traditional Choice
Dentures have come a long way from your grandmother’s set that sat in a glass by the bed. Today’s dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever. You have two types: full dentures replace all your teeth on one arch. Partial dentures fill in gaps when you still have some natural teeth.
Dentures are the most affordable option. They can be made quickly. And for patients who have lost all their teeth, they’re often the only nonsurgical option. However, dentures sit on your gums, not in your bone. They can shift or slip when you eat or talk. They require daily removal for cleaning. And without roots to stimulate your bone, your jaw will shrink over time, which can change the fit.
Dentures are often best for patients who need to replace many or all of their teeth on a budget.
How to Decide
There’s no single best option for everyone. Here’s how we help you choose:
- Your budget: If cost is your main concern, dentures or bridges might be the right starting point. But consider long-term value; implants can last a lifetime with proper care.
- Your bone health: If you’ve been missing teeth for years, you may not have enough bone for implants without a bone graft. That adds time and cost.
- Your dental history: If your remaining teeth are healthy and strong, a bridge could work well. If you have other dental issues, an implant might be a smarter investment.
